Program Calls on Young Entrepreneurs

Young people will design, organize, and run their own business as part of the JA Company Program.

A program will give young people a chance to dip their toe into the waters of entrepreneurship in a risk free way.

The JA Company Program is a free initiative that gives teens a chance to work with other young people and a team of business advisors to create, organize, and operate a real company.

Ben Hansford gave it a try, and his group designed a bee house business. Hansford says he learned valuable life skills.

"You get to start your own business and you work with so many different people, so you learn how to work with different personalities and stuff like that and you overcome different things as a business, learning how to sell and market and develop your product."

The program lasts for 20 weeks starting in the last week of October, and Program Coordinator at JA London and District Dan Knight says it's a great way to gain business sense.

"It's completely free. Students are asked if they want to make a $10 investment as a shareholder in the company so they can share in the profits at the end of the day if they do make a profit, but other than that it's completely free for them."

Knight says this can also help participants in their job searches.

"We find that there's a statistic that says that if you take our programs you're 70% more likely to get a job over people that haven't. So we encourage people to take part and put it on your resume."

They will hold sessions in Woodstock, Tillsonburg, London, Stratford, Strathroy, and St Thomas.
