CAMI now has 800 workers split between two rotating shifts, plus about 450 skilled trades employees who are not on rotating shifts.
INGERSOLL - It's back to work for about 1,500 workers at CAMI in Ingersoll.
The plant assembles electric delivery vehicles for BrightDrop, but Plant Chair Mike Van Boekel says production was shutdown in mid-October last year due to a battery shortage.
"We have been waiting for a while now for a new battery plant to get running and tooled up. It just started production, so hopefully it goes smoothly, gets more of our members back to work, and also provides the battery for our electric delivery truck."
He says they were able to bring some people back to work with rotating shifts.
"A lot of them come back this week and then we're doing two weeks on and two weeks off with rotating layoffs. So roughly a third of them came back this week, the other third will come back next week, and we have approximately another third already working just getting stuff set up and at the new battery plant."
Each rotating shift includes about 400 workers, plus they have about 450 skilled trades employees who are not on rotating shifts.
Van Boekel is happy to see them back in the plant.
"It started up yesterday so hopefully it's smooth sailing, orders are strong and so we can get everybody back to work."
