Oxford County Council is asking the province to undertake a legislative review process for the approval of landfill proposals in Ontario.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Council went into a closed session to look at an OPAL resolution and the Private Members Bill put forth by local MPP Ernie Hardeman.
The resolution and Private Members bill asks the Province to require municipal level approval for all new landfill developments. CAO for the County Peter Crockett explains what came from the closed door session.
"We basically came to the conclusion and recommended to council that while their may very well be some merit in the province looking at the process for the approval of landfill sites, that we felt that it was important that we simply look at it in the context of seeking the Government to commence a legislative review of the process."
The Council report further puts forward a proposed resolution for Council to ask the Province to undertake a legislative review process for the approval of landfill proposals in Ontario, including an assessment of the potential to allow a separate municipal consent requirement.
Crockett explains what they hope will come out of this resolution.
"We would hope that the Province will take a look at the legislative process for landfill approvals and come to some conclusions, we raised in our public report, a number of areas of interest or where there may be questions. From that review it's quite possible that the Province may change some elements of the approval process but we think that it needs to be comprehensively looked at before you can say it should or should not change."
