Lion's Clubs across Oxford County are raising money for a back-up generator
WOODSTOCK- Lion's Clubs across Oxford County are teaming up with Sakura house to fund raise money to purchase a back-up generator for the hospice. Sakura house provides palliative care for up to 10 patients. For the past five years the hospice has been without a back-up generator, fortunately power outages have not been long.
Registered Nurse Sally Cleary works at Sakura House and said during outages,"We can't look after patients our emergency lights don't last long, the oxygen has to be changed over to tanks and we have to fill the liquid oxygen immediately and we've got 10 patients if they are quite ill we don't feel without a generator that we can provide safe quality care."
This past winter was a particularly harsh with a ice storm affecting areas across Ontario especially in the Toronto and GTA area where outages lasted for several days and even weeks. VON South-West Ontario District Executive Director Cindy Kinnon says that had the power outages affected Sakura house in the same way, it could have been dangerous for patients.
"The ice storm there were brown outs all over the province during that time and it would have been scary here knowing that there was a possibility of the power going off, so at least we've taken away the anxiety that that could even happen."
The 12, 000 square foot mansion was donated by Toyota and turned into a hospice. The care is provided free of charge, those interested in what Sakura house has to offer can check out their website www.vonsakurahouse.com
If you are interested in donating to the back-up generator fund, donations can be made directly to Sakura house or to participating Lion's Clubs.
