If you've got any romaine lettuce in your fridge, health officials in Canada and the U-S are urging you to throw it away.
OXFORD COUNTY - Southwestern Public Health is joining food regulators in Canada and the U-S in warning people to not eat romaine lettuce right now because of a potential E. coli contamination.
Romaine lettuce is believed to be the cause of a possible outbreak that has sickened 18 people in Ontario and Quebec, while 32 people across 11 states have reportedly fallen ill.
Program Manager with Southwestern Public Health Amy Pavlepic explains why you are still seeing romaine lettuce in stores.
"Currently there is no recall, we get are recall information from the Canadian food inspection agency and there currently is no recall linked to this product."
While most romaine sold this time of year is grown in California, investigators say tracing the source of the contamination can be difficult because the produce is often repackaged by middlemen. Several grocery chains and restaurants have already decided to pull the lettuce from their shelves and menus, so good luck ordering a Caesar salad right now.
Pavlepic says they are reminding everyone in the Southwestern Public Health region to exercises caution and avoid romaine at this time.
"We would advise that you make sure you are aware that their could be e-coli in the romaine lettuce, the whole lettuce heads or even if you have any salad mixes that contain romaine lettuce as well."
