Brant County Mayor David Bailey showed 55 grade five students from Burford Elementary what it's like to work at the Burford Administration Office.
COUNTY OF BRANT - Mayor of Brant County David Bailey welcomed 55 grade 5 students from the Burford Elementary School on Thursday, December 13th.
Mayor Bailey covered a range of topics focused on municipal government tasks, such as the roles of Mayor and Councillor, how the wards are divided within the county, how the citizens can come to county to voice their concerns and propose ideas, and how the council makes decisions.
"I was so impressed with the children," said Mayor Bailey. "They asked great questions throughout our time together. They were so engaged and interested."
One of the highlights of their visit included students making proposals for the Mayor's consideration.
"The students' proposals ranged from homeless initiatives, to protecting animals and suggestions to offer new recreational activities," Mayor Bailey stated. "They had given their proposals a lot of thought."
The students were also taught about the different jobs that the municipal government has to offer.
"I hope that some of these children will consider a career in municipal government," Mayor Bailey wishes. "There are so many diverse opportunities such as being paramedic, firefighter, working with the roads crews or being an engineer."
One young girl even shared that she wants to be Prime Minister one day.
"I shared that ever since I was young, I wanted to be the Mayor," said Bailey. "My hope is for these children to chase their dreams and never give up."
