Woodstock Police, along with OPP and others are celebrating the week by arranging some special activities.
WOODSTOCK -- This week is National Police Week, with Woodstock Police, along with OPP and other local service partners were showing off their displays to the public at Woodstock's Museum Square.
A number of local first response services and groups were on hand Wednesday afternoon in front of the museum, including OPP, Woodstock Fire, Oxford EMS, Canadian Military Police and Fanshawe College Police Foundations.
Police Week began in Canada in 1970 as a way to connect with communities and increase awareness about the services that police provide.
The week also carries a strong message about road safety -- with it also being Canada Road Safety Week, part of a national campaign aimed at making Canada's roads the safest in the world. It's something Constable Eric Hiiuvain, Highschool Liaison Officer with Woodstock Police Service will be highlighting with local students later this week.
"I'm partnering up with OSAID, which is Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving and we're doing an awareness campaign for seatbelts and distracted driving, so we're making the students aware over the lunch hour this week to be safe on the road with the long weekend coming up."
Hiiuvain says he and other officers will be at College Avenue Secondary School on Friday of this week, talking to driving age students about impaired driving before the long weekend. A special presentation in the school's gym will follow.
