Tillsonburg's OPP services will cost less in the new year. The 2013 contract is close to 40-thousand dollars less than it was this year. Sergeant Kevin Hummel says not to worry, service will stay the same. "The numbers that came out were slightly lower than they were last year. But that doesn't mean there's going to be any less service for the people of Tillsonburg, they're going to have the exact same service." Hummel says savings are estimated to come from cuts in full time staff, their vehicle fleet, and making more use of on-line training. "There's several efficiencies the OPP has realized...some of them have to do with vehicles. We're buying more eco-friendly vehicles. Also the academy, we've gone into a lot of e-learning where the officer will get behind a computer, rather than having to travel somewhere to learn something." The contract still comes in at an estimated 3.3-million dollars. Chair of the town's Police Services Board Larry Scanlan says residents pay a considerable amount. "The Town of Tillsonburg is going to be right around $440 per household. There are some that are higher, there are going to be some areas in Oxford that are lower, mostly in rural areas where the crime rates aren't as high." But the news of a cost reduction is a surprise, as the Town of Ingersoll has been bracing for a substantial increase in its OPP costs as their contract comes up for renewal.
