Police Chief Apologizes Over Parking Flap

Woodstock's Police Chief is apologizing over one of his officers, snapped parked in a handicapped parking space. It happened Tuesday morning, at the TA Truck Stop by the 401. The photo (pictured right) was taken by a London resident, who says he saw the officer come into the truck stop and sit down to have breakfast. However, Woodstock Police Chief Rod Freeman says the officer was waiting for paperwork from the truck stop's management. "The officers were originally responding to a call of service at the truck stop and once that call for service had been adequately addressed and the urgency diminished, the officer should've properly parked his cruiser before he went in to the truck stop to talk to the management. He is deeply embarrassed by that fact. He recognises the seriousness of the parking infraction and I felt given all the circumstances that it would be adequately and properly addressed by issuing the officer a verbal warning, recognising that he is a very fine officer who regularly demonstrates good judgement. In this particular case, he didn't." He says it's a lesson for all officers that their conduct is subject to scrutiny at all times, especially in the age of social media. "We've always believed and known that when we're out on patrol and we're in the public sight, the public has certain expectations about our conduct and in this age of social media, when we have a gaffe or a momentarily lapse of judgement, we can find that lapse of judgement posted all over the world very quickly and that's what happened in this case."
