Everyone is welcome to help plant some trees this Saturday with the City of Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - The City of Woodstock is inviting the community to join them to help plant some trees.
They will be joined by several local organizations including the Woodstock Oxford Rotary and other volunteers for the tree planting at Shanna Larsen Park.
Grace Carbilledo-Vincent with Woodstock Oxford Rotary says not only is it good for the environment but it helps the youth too.
"It's a big impact for our city of Woodstock because now we just wanted to plant the trees but this is going to be for our youth, for our children in the future, and of course we know that trees are really good for the environment."
Carbilledo-Vincent says all of the community is welcome to help out, including the high school students who can earn some community service hours.
"Everyone is welcome. And of course we wanted to invite also the youth and the students, especially high school students because it would be counted for their volunteer work, the hours that they need. So we're going to sign their forms if they wanted to earn the hours for volunteering."
The club planted 500 out of the 2,000 trees last year and Carbilledo-Vincent says they're looking to surpass that amount, by working with three other organizations.
She adds the first 100 people that attend will get a free t-shirt.
Lunch will be provided and it goes on Saturday from 8:00am to 12:00pm.
The event is timely as Ontario is cancelling a tree-planting program at a time when those involved say the fight against climate change should be stepped up.
The day after Premier Doug Ford's government delivered its budget this month, the Ministry of Natural Resources told Forests Ontario that the ``50 Million Tree Program'' was being scrapped to save 4.7-million dollars a year, more than 27-million trees have been planted through then provincial program since 2008.
