The County has created a Transportation Master Plan which includes a section on cycling. It's a move to make biking easier and safer throughout Oxford. The initiative will see more "Share the Road" signs, more roads with fog lines, and wider hard surfaces during road resurfacing projects. There is also going to be a Cycling Advisory Committee which will focus on educating cyclers and drivers. Director of Public Works for the County Rob Walton says education is what it all comes down to. "The changes that we're making are a little at a time and incremental and actually quite small in the grand scheme of things. So the education as to how these two vastly different types of vehicles can share the road is really the most important thing because there are ways for that to happen," said Walton. Walton says they can't rebuild every road, but this at least gets the ball rolling. County Councillor David Mayberry thinks this is a great start to creating a safer environment. "We actually need to get people out actively transporting themselves, and they need to feel safe and comfortable. So what we want to do in the big picture, especially where there's going to be a higher volume of bike traffic, is make sure we're creating a system where they feel that comfort," said Mayberry.
