The Ontario Government is looking at alternatives to a proposed high speed rail line from Windsor to London which would have a huge impact on Oxford County.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Ontario Government has announced plans to look at alternatives to the high speed rail line from Toronto to Windsor.
Several municipalities in Oxford County are against the proposed line because it would disrupt farm land and potentially block of access to major towns. Zorra Township and East Zorra Tavistock have already made their voices heard on this issue, saying they don't want the high speed rail line in their area.
Transportation Minister Jeff Yurek announced yesterday the government wants to explore every possible option when it comes to high speed rail. Local MPP Ernie Hardeman says this is good news for our area.
"By widening the scope of regional transit options, we are keeping our commitment to improving options for people who use transit, while balancing the concerns of businesses and rural communities. Expanding the options that are being reviewed has been a consistent request from the County of Oxford and the people of my riding. Today I am happy to say that it is another promise we are moving forward on."
Hardeman says the Government still wants to improve transit for our region.
"Looking at different approaches for regional transit is the best way to balance solutions for commuters, with the concerns of residents impacted by these infrastructure projects,” said Hardeman. This approach will make sure that the right transportation options for the people of Ontario are brought forward so we can get Ontario moving again."
The NDP is taking issue with this, specifically the New Democrat MPP for Windsor West Lisa Gretzky who says alternatives won't be the game changer that this area is looking for. The NDP plans to lobby against the PC back track of the high speed rail line.
