Norfolk OPP want parents to keep a close eye on their child's online activity, after eight young girls received messages from a suspicious man over Instagram.
NORFOLK COUNTY - Eight young girls in Norfolk County were the victims of some shady online behaviour.
OPP received a call from school officials regarding a suspicious man that had messaged the girls on Instagram, asking for inappropriate pictures.
Norfolk County Interim Detachment Commander, Lisa Anderson says all of the girls had been potential victims to the male.
"The Internet is a powerful tool for researching a school project, connecting with friends or entertainment, but there are pitfalls. Be careful what you post or share with others. I am very proud of the young ladies involved in this incident. Not only did they recognize that this was inappropriate, they also notified their parents immediately to seek further guidance."
Police are reminding parents of these tips to keep young people save online:
- Set rules about household Internet use.
- Always keep computers in high traffic areas.
- Know your child's user name/passwords and contacts.
- Realize that anything posted online is permanent.
- Protect your passwords and make them hard to guess.
- Be careful with webcams - your image can be captured.
- Don't say anything online you wouldn't say in real life.
They are also reminding parents and kids that the appropriate age to start online social media accounts is about 13 years of age.
