It's the same price increase with a new effective date.
OXFORD COUNTY - The garbage bag tag debate will return to Oxford County Council.
Council will consider increasing the price from $2 to $3 once again during this Wednesday's meeting. However, instead of the price jump taking effect in May, this new motion calls for it to begin in January 2026.
The bag tag discussion was a hot topic during the last meeting. There were two votes on the matter and they were both defeated with a split 5-5 vote. Later in the meeting, South-West Oxford Mayor David Mayberry introduced a notice of motion, asking council to consider increasing the bag tag price effective January 2026 at another meeting.
The County has a user pay system for its waste collection, so residents cover the cost of their garbage pickup through the bag tags. Oxford County is also rolling out a green bin organics program over the next few years. It's set to begin next year in Woodstock and South-West Oxford, and in 2027 for the rest of the County.
During his interview with Heart FM on February 27th, Warden Marcus Ryan said you could still end up paying the same for garbage bag tags if you use the green bins properly.
"So in theory, you could divert enough from your garbage bag (to your green bin) that you don't need to buy as many bag tags. So the price of a single bag tag could go up, but what you spend over a year on bag tags could still be the same."
This Wednesday's council meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. and you can find the full agenda online here. You will also be able to livestream the meeting online here.
