Oxford Public Health Marking World Breastfeeding Week

Local restaurants and public facilities are being reminded this week of a woman's right to breastfeed in public.

Anytime, anywhere.

Women's right to breastfeed in public is being celebrated on this World Breastfeeding Week.

Oxford Public Health is getting behind the issue in sending its public health inspectors into local restaurants and public facilities.

They're talking to owners and managers, reminding them of the Ontario Human Rights Code that allows women to breastfeed without being asked to move or cover up.

Public Health Nurse and Lactation Consultant Janice Magill says something as natural as breastfeeding shouldn't be awkward. "It is simply because we are not maybe familiar with seeing people breastfeeding their babies out and about in public and the more that we see that, the less awkward it becomes. So we want to encourage women to take advantage".

Public Health is distributing stickers for businesses to put in their windows, indicating mothers are welcomed to breastfeed.

Magill is also welcoming news of $2.5-million in provincial money towards supports for breastfeeding moms, including a 24-hour help line.
