Oxford County is looking to enter a Government of Canada competition aimed at funding municipal projects through the use of data and connected technology.
Oxford County is getting ready to take part in the Smart Cities Challenge.
Woodstock Mayor and County Councillor Trevor Birtch says the Smart Cities Challenge is a Government of Canada competition that will fund four municipal projects that will achieve meaningful outcomes for residents through the use of data and connected technology.
"We are going to look at some of the things that we are already doing well and look at how we can improve them through technology to make sure that we are optimizing all the levels of service and that is really what a Smart Community is all about."
Council is going to be asked on Wednesday to establish a sub-committee with members from each of Oxford's eight area municipalities. Birtch says Oxford County is excited about the competition because they feel like they have a leg up with the work already done in the Future Oxford Community Sustainability Plan.
"This is something where some of our neighbouring partners have already voiced to us, that we are poised to do very well in this challenge. Now whether or not we win or lose, I think it is all about the process and continuing to build our networks and working with other individuals to help make sure that everyone is doing what's right."
Prizes in the challenge are between 5 and 50 million dollars and Oxford's submission will draw from various community driven projects already established from the Future Oxford Community Sustainability Plan.
