Oxford County Supports Net Metering Program

Oxford is throwing its support behind a program that could reward people more for generating their own electricity.

Oxford County supports a future net metering program being proposed by the province. 

Potential changes to net metering will increase the ability to generate electricity on the house side of the meter and put that energy back into the grid and get compensated for it. C.A.O for the County Peter Crockett says this ties in nicely with Oxford County's 2050 renewable energy goal. 

"Net metering is one of the reasons that anyone would generate electricity of their own, particularly more than they are going to consume or at periods of time during the day that they are not consuming energy." 

The proposed changes to net metering would allow the County to generate renewable energy based electricity anywhere in the County and get compensated for it. Adoption of the report is a clear indication to the province that Oxford County is diligent in its efforts to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2050, recognizing the significance of regulatory reform that will aid in our quest. 

Crockett provides an example of how the changes would benefit Oxford. 

"At our Salford Waste Management Facility we don't have an account that would use enough electricity to get full value for that at that location so we want to be able to go against a whole number of accounts that we have with our hydro LDC's."
