OXFORD COUNTY - From books to bread makers - the Oxford County Public Library hopes to have it all.
Oxford County Library is planning to start a program that would allow members to borrow kitchen appliances in much the same way books are loaned out now. CEO and Chief Librarian Lisa Miettinen says, "It's an opportunity for people to borrow kitchen appliances and kitchen wear to test them out before they commit to purchasing. So possibly expensive items like bread makers and pasta makers. And also an opportunity for families to borrow items that they may not need to use very often but maybe just once in a while like canning supplies."
The idea of the Kitchen Library was brought to Miettinen by the Niagara-On-The-Lake Public Library when she was visiting there last summer. Miettinen believes there's a lot of potential for great things with a similar program in this area, especially in terms of helping low-income families.
But to really get the program started the libraries are going to need some help from residents. "We're looking for gently used or new kitchen appliances that people would be willing to donate," Miettinen says. "We will be approaching some companies to see if they would be willing to donate some materials as well. We have received a few things - we've received a couple of cake pans, a yogurt makers, a bread maker but we are still looking. One of the items we're keen to get are crock pots or slow cookers."
The hope is to offer the Kitchen Library program at no additional cost to members.
It could be a while before the program is in full swing, but Miettinen says it will be well worth the wait.
The eventual plan is to incorporate the items from the Kitchen Library into the cooking programs offered at the libraries.
