A popular chocolate company is prompting some Oxford County farmers to grow hazelnuts.
WOODSTOCK- South Central Ontario Region Economic Development Corporation delivered updates on future projects at Woodstock city council. Among them is a project between Ferrero Rocher and other companies to produce locally grown hazelnuts for use in confections and other products including Nutella.
SCOR General Manager, Art Lawson says local farmers are producing hazelnut varieties used by these companies. "Developing hazelnut varieties that are suited to our environment, winter hardy, disease resistent and we are in the phase of multiplying the trees out and getting plantations established so in about 5 years we expect to have about 20 thousand acres of hazelnut plantations."
The project is one of the ways SCOR is aligning with its strategic priority of sector development with a focus on
agriculture and food processing.
