Oxford County Approves Affordable Housing Program

The County will grant $15,000 to homeowners to build a rental unit in their homes, but they need to commit to renting the space for 10 years.

OXFORD - The My Second Unit program has been approved by the County.

The plan has been finalized to help address the shortage in affordable housing options and will launch sometime in September.

Warden Larry Martin says the County will grant $15,000 to homeowners to build a rental unit, but they need to commit to renting the space at the provincial rate for 10 years.

"This is an added source of income for the homeowner, and at the same time, it's going to provide living quarters for someone that's in need of it."

Martin also shared that the County has allocated $300,000 for this project and believes that it's a step in the right direction. Especially given the housing and homeless situations currently affecting the province.

"Every little bit helps, they are all small steps but if we get enough small steps together we can take a big one."
