Wanted: Foster homes for local kids. The Children's Aid Society of Oxford County is hoping some local families will come forward to help provide care and support. While the number of children coming into CAS care remained steady in recent months, the number of foster parents is dwindling. CAS Executive Director Bruce Burbank says it's in an effort to keep children from moving away from the communities they know. "We keep most of our children within say a 100km radius of Woodstock, but never the less, our goal is to try and minimize the disruption to a child when they come into our care. Having them leave the community is just another level of disruption that's not necessarily in their best interest." Burbank says 55-60% of foster kids stay within Oxford, but some that are diverted outside the County often need specialized care that can't be provided locally. The CAS is starting up a series of information sessions across Oxford to find new foster homes. The first information meeting is being held on Tuesday in Plattsville at 7PM. Burbank says there will be others across the County in the weeks and months ahead. Here's some more info from the CAS on Foster Homes: Foster parents can be any age; be single or a couple; have their own children, have no children, or have grown children. Foster parents care for children of all ages, from birth to 18. Children come into foster care for many different reasons, but all need a safe, loving home. Most children stay only for a short time, while others may stay for years, or move on to adoption. Some children need respite care: a surrogate aunt or uncle who will care for them for a weekend or two every month. Training, support and reimbursement are provided. To register for the Plattsville session or an information session in your community, please call 519-539-6176 or 800-250-7010.
