Since 2018, OPP in Haldimand Norfolk have responded to 171 suspected and confirmed fatal or near fatal opioid overdoses.
HALDIMAND/NORFOLK - The OPP in Haldimand and Norfolk are recognizing drug overdose awareness day.
Together with the Community Addiction and Mental Health Services of Haldimand and Norfolk and the Haldimand Norfolk Community Response table have launched the Overdose Automatic Referral program or O.A.R.
The O.A.R will allow police to make automatic referrals to the CAMHS Addiction Mobile Outreach Team (AMOT) in situations where police attend an opioid-related call for service where the individual is unable to communicate due to receiving urgent lifesaving medical treatment.
Since 2018, Haldimand and Norfolk County OPP have been called to investigate and assist in 171 occurrences involving suspected and confirmed, fatal and near fatal opioid overdoses. Of those occurrences, 28 of these were fatalities. In 2020 alone, the OPP have attended 68 opioid-related calls for service, 9 of which were fatal.
The Addiction Mobile Outreach Team (AMOT) is a program of Community Addiction and Mental Health Services (CAMHS) of Haldimand and Norfolk. The team is comprised of Addiction Outreach Counsellors, Peer Workers who have their own lived experience with addictions and a Nurse Practitioner who is available to provide primary care for individuals living with a current addiction who are without a family doctor. As the name suggests, the team is available to go mobile and meet individuals in the community.
Supports include assessment and referral, supportive counseling and assistance with systems navigation. They are mobile across Haldimand and Norfolk, seven days a week, from 8:30am to 8:30pm and can be reached directly by calling 519-426-8760 or 1-877-909-4357 ext. 1120.
