OPP Warn Public About Employment Scam

Provincial Police are warning the public about a new scam involving job advertisements.

The OPP are warning the public about a new scam in the region. 

It is called the employment scam and how it works is a phony job ad will be posted online or in the local paper. Anyone who applies to the ad will be told that this is a legitimate employment oppurtunity and receieve an envelope in the mail with directions on how to get fast cash. 

The victim will receive a cheque in the mail with directions to deposit the cheque and withdraw the full amount. Once the cash is withdrawn, the victim is then directed to forward the funds through a money transfer service minus $400 to keep for themselves as "pay". 

In Norfolk County a person was duped out of $2,400 with this scam. Once you deposit a cheque into your account, you are responsible for the fraudulent deposit and the person in Norfolk now owes the bank the money. Some banking transactions have exceeded $5000 dollars. 

The OPP are advising the public NOT to wire unknown persons, business or locations any amount of money.  If anyone has received this type of correspondence or if you are unsure, consult with a banking institution or a trusted resource first before entering into such a transaction.
