The West Region OPP is looking to spread awareness when it comes to real and replica firearms.
WEST REGION - The West Region OPP is bringing light to the issue of replica firearms.
They are asking the public if they could tell the difference between real and replica guns. Sergeant Ed Sanchuck says the West Region has seen a significant rise in replica firearms being used in crimes and seized.
"So, in 2021 there was 259, in 2022 there were 270, 2023 had 310 and in 2024 365."
Sanchuck adds using replica guns can lead to serious consequences as they are considered real under the Criminal Code if they are used to intimidate, threaten or commit and offence.
"Anyone who uses an air gun or replica firearm to commit a crime could face the same penalties under the Criminal Code as someone who uses a regular firearm."
Sanchuck mentions until officers know different, a suspect with a replica firearm is treated as a significant public safety risk.
