OPP will be on the lookout for distracted drivers this Labour Day long weekend.
OXFORD COUNTY - The long weekend has arrived and OPP are hitting the roads in their latest distracted driving campaign.
They will be on the lookout for drivers not paying attention while behind the wheel; whether it be texting, eating or changing the radio station.
Constable Laura Brown says this is a serious problem that needs to be addressed.
"Provincially we have investigated over 5,600 collisions involving inattentive drivers just in 2018 on OPP roads. In that unfortunately 31 people lost their lives and over 1,000 of them left people with injuries."
Brown says they really want to bring this message home, with the kids going back to school on Tuesday.
"It's important for us to remember that children are gearing up to go back to school. That's just one more important reason for us to be keeping our attention behind the wheel where it belongs."
Inattentive drivers could face a fine of $490 and three demerit points.
That will jump to $1,000, three demerit points and a three day license suspension in January 2019. If you are a novice driver the suspension is 30 days for the first conviction and 90 days for the second conviction. If you're convicted a third time, your license will be cancelled and you will be removed from the graduated licensing system.
The distracted driving campaign kicked off today and will wrap up on Monday.
