The Extended Family Project from Operation Sharing is looking to pair local high school students with seniors.
Operation Sharing is expanding their Extended Family Project with two new initiatives.
EFP co-coordinator Eric Schmiedl tells Heart FM about the new Adopt A Senior program they are rolling out for high school students.
"Basically we are asking high school students to come up with teams of two or three. They will then be matched up with a senior and can help out by simply providing a listening ear for some of the stories they have to tell, some of our seniors don't have a lot outlets for that type of thing. They will also be asked to do some light chores for them, maybe a little bit of cleaning, things like that to help out the seniors."
The Extended Family Project is also starting the Churches Challenge. They are challenging churches in Oxford County that support Operation Sharing to come up with one team per church. Those teams will be recruited to help people in need.
EFP has won a national award for the City of Woodstock for its innovation concept. In the past EFP teams have helped out with things like teaching English as a second language to a Syrian Refugee family living in Ingersoll. Another team helps a man with limited ability with things like grocery shopping and attending doctor visits. Schmiedl says this is all possible because of our amazing volunteers.
"Volunteers are needed to make Extended Family work. Operation Sharing appreciates the efforts of all our volunteers. People who wish to volunteer are asked to call Operation Sharing at 519-539-3361."
