Whether or not Oxford County joins a peer review of the landfill proposal, local citizens are commissioning their own independent review. Oxford People Against the Landfill have hired their own Geo-Scientist to conduct a review of Walker Industries' proposal. Walker is looking at opening a massive landfill in the Beachville Quarry. OPAL Spokesperson Steve McSwiggan says they've hired Wilf Ruland through donated funds to the fight against the landfill. "He has a professional designation he has to uphold. It may work against OPAL's wishes, it may work with OPAL's wishes, but at least it's not being funded by the proponent. It's clear that it's being funded by the people in Oxford that care enough not to have a landfill located so close to their community." County Council tonight will try to decide for a 3rd time whether or not they'll join the peer review being funded by Walker Industries. They have twice deferred a decision, after much discussion. OPAL fears there are too many strings attached to that agreement. McSwiggan says, "Yeah, the taxpayer gets off the hook for not paying for an EA Peer Review Group, but at the same time, these strings are attached to that independent review group, so to speak."
