A round of applause broke out in Oxford County Council Chambers today, when council voted 5-3 in favour of spending just under 1 million dollars to conduct research into waste reduction technology.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Council has decided to invest just under a million dollars into research for waste reduction technology.
Ingersoll Mayor Ted Comiskey introduced the notice of motion today. He says this will help the county reach its zero waste goal by 2025.
"This technology building will bring in waste from all sectors; whether that be residential, commercial, industrial or institutional and it will process it. This means it will divide everything out so that it all goes for composting, recycling, reusing, excreta. At the end of this building the only thing that can go to the landfill is less than 10 percent of stuff that this point in time cannot likely be dealt with. But I believe that necessity is the mother of invention and we know that at that point in time we will find a use for that 10 percent or a way to properly dispose of it without it going to landfill."
Comiskey adds this research will look into every aspect of the technology; from legality to implementing the process itself.
Council voted 7-3 in favour of the motion. Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch was one of the councillors to vote against it.
"I was hoping that we would hit pause, allow democracy to take place through the election and the new council to make an informed decision and potentially save money."
