Old Swiss Chalet Building Under Demolition

The former Dundas St. Swiss Chalet building is being pulled apart. Demolition has begun on the building to make way for a new transit terminal for city buses. City Engineer Harold DeHaan says it's nice to see some action at the site. "This whole project has been underway for a few years now, starting with the study a number of years ago. It's nice to finally see some actual physical work happening, starting with the demolition. Hopefully later on in the remainder of the year, the actual construction of the bus terminal." Arts Crushing out of London is handling the demo, pulling the building apart from the back. They handled last year's demolition of the Capitol Theatre building. A mandatory site meeting was held today for prospective construction companies bidding on building the new terminal (rendering pictured right). It was a chance to review the scope of the project, and for the city to answer any questions. DeHaan was pleased with the turnout. "Ya, very pleased with the show we saw today. There was at least a dozen contractors. I like to see that kind of interest." Bidding closes August 2nd. Construction is expected to run from September to December or January. The demolition cost is $30-thousand, while the transit terminal is expected to come in around $1.3-million.
