Norwich Township Tax Increase

Residents in Norwich Township are facing a nearly 8 percent tax increase this year.

NORWICH - Residents in Norwich Township are facing a nearly 8 percent tax increase this year. 

The Operation Budget was completed earlier this month and will cost the average homeowner (assessment of $230,500) $81 more than in 2014, or $6.75 per month. 

Director of Finance Michael Legge says they had their single greatest one year funding cut from the province for 2015.

Legge says despite many years of strong building fees, they are starting to ebb a little there too. 

"I believe the department heads did the absolute best they could to bring in a very reasonable budget that got presented to council and the only way we could have sliced this budget any further would be to start cutting municipal services and that is something council was not interested in discussing."

The draft budget presentation included Total Operating Expenses for 2015 of $8,873,256, which represents only a 0.99% increase from the prior year, and Total Operating Revenues for 2015 of $2,830,018, which is a decrease of 13.84% from 2015.

The overall tax levy for both Operating and Capital will be increasing by an amount of $579,518 or 9.3% over 2014. After assessment growth of 1.32% is factored in, this will represent a 7.98% impact to tax payers on the municipal levy for 2015.
