A handful of fundraisers are taking place in order to support a Norwich family in their fight to stay in Canada.
NORWICH - The Norwich community is banding together in support of a local family.
Daniel and Jaqueline Alfaro moved to the area back in 2015 with their two daughters and they have been very involved in the community since then. They have volunteered for the Optimist Club and their daughters have gone to school and played local sports in the community.
But the family received devastating news recently and Alison Vankerrebroeck has decided to hold a bottle drive to help them out in this time of need.
"Right now they're going through a hard time with a family situation where they are being deported back to Mexico so right now we are trying to raise some money to appeal that decision."
The money raised will help the family hire an immigration lawyer.
Vankerrebroeck has been collecting donations throughout the community and says the Norwich Beer Store will also collect donations today and on Saturday.
"I'm hoping to raise $1,000. I've gone a few times already and I'm already up to $270 so I'm hoping to raise $1,000 which hopefully will be great for the family."
Brandon Heleniak started a GoFundMe page for the family five days ago, sharing the family's story and explaining why they want to stay in Canada. It has already raised over $7,500 and you can donate to the cause online here.
