Norfolk Senior Loses $300,000 to Romance Scam

The Romance scam or dating scam has claimed yet another victim. After corresponding for 4 months the victim was out $300,000 to someone they chatted with on a dating website.

NORFOLK COUNTY - OPP say people should familiarize themselves with various scams including the Romance and Dating Scam, after a Norfolk County resident fell victim and is now out $300,000. 

The victim reached out to police, reporting that they established an online relationship over the internet after meeting on a dating website.

Through the course of the four month correspondence, the victim received a request to borrow money to help with several emergencies. 

Police say the victim is a senior citizen forwarded approximately $300,000 between July and November of this year.

Single or recently unattached people, often females are among the growing number of vulnerable population to be victimized by criminals online. 

Authorities say knowledge is power regardless of age and gender.   There are basic steps to protect yourself from becoming victim of fraud.  The first tip and the simplest is to never giving out personal information over the phone, the internet or through social media/dating websites.

Always get independent advice - from family members, a trusted friend or advisor, especially if any offers involve money, personal information, time or commitment.

Lastly, police encourage the public to report fraudulent crimes like this right away.  For more information on fraud in Canada contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
