Norfolk OPP briefs include the Microsoft Scam, a shed break and enter and four stolen medicinal marijuana plants.
NORTH WALSINGHAM - Norfolk OPP are warning the public about the Microsoft Scam after a resident in North Walsingham was tricked out of $1,800.
Officers were called to a home on 2nd Concession Line at shortly before 3:30pm Friday.
They say a man had called the victim, claimed they had a virus on their computer and they needed remote access in order to fix it for them. The victim gave the fraudster access to all of their personal and financial accounts. They were told to pay for the service over the phone using multiple iTunes gift cards.
These scam artists usually claim to work for Microsoft or Windows, ask you to open Window's Event Viewer in order to confirm their false diagnosis.
If you have fallen victim to a scam before there's also a chance they may call you again to try to con you out of more money. This time they may pretend to work for a foreign government, police or a bank and say they'll try to recover the money you lost for a fee.
If you think you are being contacted by a scam artist hang up and call the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
