Oxford People Against the Dump host latest Town Hall meeting Saturday
Empowered citizenry is the key to winning.
That from Timmins-James Bay MP and author of Unlikely Radicals Charlie Angus who was a key speaker at the Oxford People Against the Landfill's town hall event Saturday.
Angus was instrumental in stopping the Adam's Mine Dump which was proposed for Boston Township, about 11 kms south of Kirkland Lake.
He says while he does believe there should be land fills, he finds Walker's Oxford proposal disturbing.
"The fact that it is so close to the river. The fact that it's lime stone. Quarries are not where you put dumps, it's just not how it's done. The fact that we have sink holes on the property, there's too too many unknowns. The fact that you can't get straight answers on the ground water. The ground water is the key. It's nothing to do with the dust, it has nothing to do with the birds, it has nothing to do with the traffic, it's about the water, water, water and you're not getting straight answers on the water and that tells me... be suspicious."
Angus says residents have the right to stand up and saying 'I have a right to participate, know the facts and ask questions and get proper answers'. He says if you aren't getting proper answers you have the right to say 'no'.
When it comes to the Southwestern Landfill Proposal, OPAL spokesperson Steve McSwiggan says they are not going to let it happen.
"We can stop this if there's enough of us, we can stop anything from coming here. Especially something as nonsense as this. Coming into a site that isn't prepared for that, it was given to, on loan to companies to make all kinds of money and they have an obligation to restore that back to it's original condition."
McSwiggan is encouraging everyone who hasn't already done so to submit their official comments on Walker Industries's Southwestern Landfill Proposal Terms of Reference to the Ministry of Environment by the October 30 deadline.
