Will you be watching the solar eclipse on Monday April 8th?
OXFORD COUNTY - It's going to be a dark day in Oxford County when we experience a solar eclipse.
According to Southwestern Public Health, most of Oxford and Elgin will experience a near total eclipse between 2:00 p.m. and 4:29 p.m. on Monday April 8th. Areas closer to Lake Erie will see a total eclipse.
The health unit says wearing solar eclipse glasses will protect your eyes if you want to watch the solar event. If you don't wear them, you could experience damage to your retina called solar retinopathy. The symptoms could last anywhere between 12 and 48 hours, and they include retinal burns, blurred vision, and temporary or permanent vision loss (delayed or onset). Regular sunglasses will not protect your eyes from an eclipse.
Southwestern Public Health did have free solar eclipse glasses at its Woodstock office yesterday, but they have since sold out and it's unclear if they will get any more before the big day.
Several school boards will observe PA Days on the day of the eclipse, including the Thames Valley District School Board and the London District Catholic School Board.
