New Smoke Free Policy In Perth County

Perth District Health Unit and County Fire are applauding the Stratford and Perth Housing Corporation for implementing the smoke free policy.

PERTH COUNTY - This week is National Non-Smoking Week in Canada which promotes the right to breathe clean air.

The week lasts from January the 20th to the 26th and hopes to free people from second hand smoking. The Perth District Health Unit along with the Perth County Fire Department are happy with the Perth and Stratford Housing Corporation as they implemented a smoke free policy. This will effect Stratford, Perth County and St. Marys. The policy was originally put in on August 1, 2018 which made smoking or vaping for all residents and visitors on all Perth and Stratford Housing Corporation illegal. Tobacco Enforcement Officer Joel Skelding says they work with private property owners.

"Private property owners and landlords it's up to them to implement smoke free policies in their location. We work with them to address those processes and assist them if that's the way they want to proceed."

Skelding explains the positives that the policy will have.

"The biggest goal is to reduce the negative impact of smoking on other tenants, or non smokers, as well as particularly children in those units. It's been established that it'll improve the safety and lower the risk of fire."

If you are a current tenant that has signed a lease agreements before the policy was implemented then you are exempt from this policy as long as you remain in that unit or property.
