If you drive by a school zone on your way to and from work each day... be prepared for Woodstock's School Zone Policy to come into effect.
WOODSTOCK - With the first day of school a week away, Woodstock parents might have noticed new signage around some of our local schools.
Woodstock's School Zone Policy will be coming into effect next week.
Drivers will have to follow a 40km speed limit 150m before and after driving past the school area. Police will also be enforcing no stopping restrictions.
City Engineer Harold de Haan says they started forming the policy after Oxford County Public Health teamed up with the local school boards to create an active transportation committee.
"From the city's point of view, we developed the School Zone Policy to help improve the safety around schools so parents wouldn't feel as uncomfortable having their kids walking to school and kid would feel more comfortable walking to school."
The policy was passed by Woodstock City Council last November, in hopes of making the streets a little safer for kids walking and riding their bikes to school. The necessary by-laws were passed in May 2018.
de Haan says student safety is the city's number one priority.
"We want to emphasize that this was done for safety reasons. It was solely to make things safer for the students going to and from school. That was the main concern of the whole operation."
