Network Southwest is aiming to make public transportation more convenient for those in rural communities.
WOODSTOCK - County councillors were introduced to a proposal on Wednesday night to a plan that is called Network Southwest. Board Member of Transportaction Ontario as well as Southwestern Ontario Transportation Alliance Kenneth Westcar explains what the plan is all about. "Network southwest is a plan to provide better public transportation including more rail, more bus, and more integration in Southwestern Ontario that will enhance economic opportunity, and societal progress."
Improving public transportation not only in the city but to outlying areas in the county was another major reason for this plan to presented. Westcar does not want councillors to forget about the smaller communities. "There are no buses anymore, and what we need to do is to ensure that people can travel freely and at low cost. In a barrier free way is to have regional buses again with connections to trains and to local public transit."
This plan would benefit elderly citizens which over the next several years will be the majority of the population in the county, but students will also be encouraged to use these modes of transportation. Westcar excited to be on hand to discuss this new endeavour. "The aging population needs special transportation needs, because Oxford County is aging quite quickly. If you travel by train or bus you will find particularly younger people are now using opportunities to work on their life which is through social media, and through various other forms of communication with their friends and acquaintances." No timeline on if or when Network Southwest will appear in the county but council did receive the plan as information.
