OXFORD COUNTY - The first National Human Trafficking Hotline was officially launched on July 1st.
It is available 24/7 and allow callers a confidential space to ask for help, connect to services and report tips.
Community Service Officer of the Woodstock Police, Shaylyn Jackson says the hotline can help anyone.
"The point of this hotline is to offer support and for all types of human trafficking, that's including both sex and labour trafficking. But it will also provide assistance to youth, adults, males, females, non-gender conforming individuals, transgender. Anyone who has ever experienced some form of trafficking, they're able to support them or link them up with appropriate support."
The hotline was federally funded and received by the Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking, resulting in its launch last week, and it is also operated by the CCEHT.
She says their detachment is in favour of it.
"The Woodstock Police is very supportive of trying to end human trafficking and supportive of getting victims of human trafficking out of that lifestyle. Unfortunately, it can be very difficult for those who have been trafficked to remove themselves or get out of that ring of people so Woodstock police work very diligently to provide support to them, connect them with victim services of Oxford County and other resources to try to help support them and get them out of that cycle. And obviously, of course, do the investigations into the people who are involved in that criminal activity."
The Woodstock Police have also created a pamphlet for local hotel workers so they can recognize human trafficking and report to them or to the hotline.
The number for the hotline is 1-833-900-1010. If you want to learn more information on the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline, you can visit their website here.
