Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of Saturday's fire on Nelson Street in Woodstock. No one was hurt and the damage is estimated at $100,000 plus contents.
WOODSTOCK - No one was hurt after a house fire in the Friendly City.
The Woodstock Fire Department responded to the fire at a two-storey, two-unit building on Nelson Street at 6:38 p.m. on Saturday.
A local cab driver spotted the smoke and flames coming from the attic and notified the residents so they could evacuate safely. Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says they did have working smoke alarms in the home, but the smoke didn't reach them.
"They had done their due diligence and they would have been notified if the smoke had entered the base of the home, but at the time the smoke was exiting through the ceiling so the alarms had not gone off."
About 20 firefighters battled the blaze, and they remained on the scene until 9:13 p.m.
Woods says the damage is estimated at about $100,000 plus contents.
"Believe it or not, there is not a ton of damage to the interior of the home. It's mostly smoke and water damage to the interior of the home. The majority of the damage is in the attic and the roof level."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time.
