Bryan Smith named the Oxford NDP Candidate for the next provincial election
Bryan Smith is the Oxford Candidate for the New Democrats in next provincial election.
Smith, who's known for his work as chair Oxford Coalition for Social Justice, and The Green Earth Campaign accepted the nomination for Oxford on Sunday night at Bronson's Grill & Lounge in Woodstock.
He says the NDP emerged as the party of choice for him due to the coalition's ongoing campaign against the Walker Landfill proposal.
"Specifically through the battle regarding the dump, I discovered that when you need help, the NDP are the people who actually offer it. You don't need to go after them. So everytime we needed help, that's where the help came from and I started to realize the NDP really are the party of social justice and they will help their constituents stick up for issues of social justice."
"That's where they are too because they indorsed our petition to the legislature at Queen's Park as policy for everybody in Ontario that we should not dump recyclables into holes in the ground and say that solves it, because that just creates another set of problems."
Smith says he's getting some good response from his supporters and others inside the party.
"There was so many pledge forms that came in from people saying this is how I can help and I'll make some phone calls, I'll put in some signs, I'll have a sign on my lawn, I'll come out an canvas door to door and that sort of stuff so there was a massive response on that."
Smith was selected over fellow nominee, housing advocate and 2011 NDP candidate, Dorothy Marie Eisen.
As for the when the next provincial election will take place, Smith couldn't guess, but adds he and his team will be ready for one whenever it happens.
