Perth County Public Health is offering Naloxone training to opioid users in the County.
The Perth District Health Unit is going to start offering overdose prevention training and Naloxone training.
Anyone who worries they are at risk of an overdose can sign up for the program. Opioid overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in Ontario and the rate has doubled in the last 10 years. Naloxone is an injectable medication that when applied at the first signs of an overdose can save a life.
Oxford County already has a similar program with Take Home Naloxone that has already saved a few lives. Perth residents are eligible to receive a Naloxone kit if they are current Opioid user or a have a history of Opioid use.
Overdose prevention training and Naloxone training involves:
- Level 1: Prevention, recognition and response education for current Opioid users and individuals with a history of Opioid use and their friends and family.
- Level 2: Naloxone training and dispensing for current Opioid users and individuals with a history of Opioid use. Individuals who complete level 1 and 2 will receive a kit with two doses of Naloxone and supplies for administration.
