Former Woodstock Mayoral candidate Dave Nadalin looking to sit on council once again

Dave Nadalin is looking to make a return to municipal politics.

The former city and county councillor plans to officially file his nomination papers for the City and County councillor position Thursday.

After making headlines over the years for mental health issues as well as his arrest on a plane in 2008, Nadalin says he's back on track.

"It has taken time. It has been a challenge. I'm certainly on the upswing with good self advocacy and good people and I'm not ashamed to say it's a set back in life, but no, if I wasn't comfortable with the way things are, you know both on the physical and mental side I wouldn't consider it but no, actually it was a good learning lesson. I feel confident on that and I'm in a good place."

Nadalin says municipal decisions over the past year and a half drove him to run again.

"The decision by this council to cut the firefighters, four member through attrition and on top of that, something that's closer to my heart, the scaling back of their emergency medical response calls is really alarming as well. Back in 1994, council started an initiative and I ran it, to get firefighters to start to respond to medical calls. Since that time we've had a tiered response agreement. They've not only saved lives but certainly been a benefit to the community and to see that scaled back is a non-starter in my mind."

Besides battling the proposed Walker landfill, Nadalin says coordinating an ad-hoc committee of all emergency service departments along with members of council is among his priorities.

"We've also got a $5 million capital budget item to renovate the Woodstock Police headquarters which to me, it's in a landlocked position. It should be looked at to combine that initiative with, the Woodstock Fire Department also needs a new hall and there's a lot of potential there for a hybrid of savings, not only from an administrative side but a capital spending side."

Nadalin also lists the Woodstock Art Gallery as a big ticket issue in the upcoming election.

Nadalin is the first candidate to file papers for a council position in Woodstock. There are two City and County Council positions up for grabs.
