A review of the Funeral, Burial, and Cremation Services Act has been put forward by Oxford MPP Hardeman.
TORONTO - Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman has proposed a motion in the Legislature.
He wants to have the Funeral, Burial, and Cremation Services Act reviewed, as in some cases, one party under the act owns the other parts. MPP Hardeman does not want people who are grieving to feel pressure to buy services while planning a funeral.
"The motion is to review to make sure that we don't have a lot of what they call tied selling, which is because I own the cemetery, I can charge whatever we need to for whatever service beyond and make them buy them from us."
He says the sector has had some amalgamation with services, which is why a review should be done.
"The majority of the people involved in the bereavement sector are doing the doing the best job they can, and have great concern for the people they are working with. It is the bad actors that we need to look at to make sure people are not getting taken advantage of."
MPP Hardeman says he expressed his gratitude to all the Members who supported the motion.
