Movie Night at Southside Park Not a Smokescreen

A local youth group is trying to snuff out the link between smoking in movies and teen smoking rates. "What the Health?" - a youth committee of Oxford Public Health is putting on a free movie night tonight at Woodstock's Southside Park. Typically, the movie nights have been held at the Ingersoll Fusion Centre in the past, but this is the first night the event will be held in Woodstock. "What the health?" member Kathleen Smith tells Heart FM, "It starts off at 7PM, we're going to have some games and there's going to be fun music playing...and then at around dusk we're going to start the movie which is 'The Croods'. There's going to be free popcorn and lots of information about what smoke free movies is and just reaching out to the community." Studies by various anti-smoking groups has pointed to a link between smoking in movies influencing youth to begin smoking. Smith, talks about the importance of raising awareness about the link between smoking in movies, and the impact on young people. "We just want to showcase that it's not cool. The media has a big impact on what we think of ourselves, and our lifestyle choices. If we can raise awareness about the importance of not getting into that (smoking), then it's going to be a successful campaign."
