Oxford OPP will be enforcing the Move Over Law this long weekend.
OPP are stressing the importance of the Move Over Law, after officers laid a record breaking amount of charges in 2016.
Provincial Police laid 2,443 charges related to the Move Over Law last year, surpassing the 2,050 charges laid in 2015. Constable Travis Parson explains why this law is in place.
"One of the most hazardous duties we perform as police officers is actually a traffic stop and the majority of injuries sustained by officers sustained in this province, specifically by OPP come from performing that duty and getting struck by other motorists while providing that duty."
The law requires you to slow down significantly when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle and move over one lane, if it can be done safely.
Oxford OPP will be enforcing the Move Over law this long weekend with a targeted campaign on the Highway.
Deputy OPP Commissioner Brad Blair says people should be aware of this law by now.
