OXFORD COUNTY - A Montreal native is passing through Oxford County today (Friday, August 11th).
Anthony Battah is on a walk, which follows the monarch butterfly's trail to Mexico to raise awareness about the endangered species.
Battah stopped in Creditville this afternoon and will be going through Woodstock on his way to Ingersoll, where he will be stopping for the night.
He says that there is no timeline for the completion of the walk but is staying on a good pace.
"I am averaging approximately 50 kilometers per day, which was exactly as planned. So, things are doing quite well. There are some little hurts here and there, but nothing major, and I am certainly on plan, and doing quite well."
Battah adds that there are multiple ways that you can help support his cause to save the monarch butterfly.
"That first one is to plant milkweed and nectar rich flowers. It is super easy, it is a fun family activity, and it is also really nice because it embellishes your property."
The other way you are able to help is by donating funds to his non-profit organization, which is the Ultra-Trail Monarch Foundation.
The athletic challenge is immense: Anthony will cross 3 countries (Canada-USA-Mexico) and cover 4500 km in 90 days. He departed from Montreal on July 29, 2023, and plans to arrive on November 1, 2023, at the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in central Mexico.
Battah is traveling with his wife and daughter and says that if at any point there needs to be more stops and breaks, he will take them in order to keep his family's needs in mind.
