Minor Changes To False Fire Alarm Bylaw

Other than a few minor alterations, the City's false fire bylaw will remain status quo.

 

Back in September, Fire officials were asked to take another look at the policy after Caressant Care Nursing and Retirement Homes requested their $1700 bill for two false alarms be waived.

 

Thursday night Council decided to stick with the policy which gives two free false alarms before charging businesses.

 

Fire Chief Scott Tegler tells Heart FM council made a good decision.  "I think the added part of the rebate back is a good incentive.  We're trying to create a fire safe community here in Woodstock or maintain that and within organizations, I think council has developed a good bylaw, it's based on good policy".

 

Tegler says council voted to change the policy from a 12 month period to a calendar year for enforcement..  "If a false occurred today it would be a year from now; it's now changed to calendar year from January 1st to December 31st".

 

Tegler says the purpose of the bylaw is to ensure equipment is working properly, it's not to generate revenue for the city.
