Local groups join the call for a $14/hr Ontario minimum wage

There are calls for Ontario to raise the minimum wage to $14 an hour.

The current rate is $10.25, which has been frozen in place since 2010.

The Oxford Regional Labour Council and Coalition for Social Justice are joining in the movement.

ORLC President Broderick Carey was part of a demonstration Thursday night (the 14th) in Woodstock where he told Heart FM, "It's really about fairness to the people of Oxford County and the people around the province.  If we had the increase in the minimum wage to $14 an hour it would put in the economy roughly $5-Billion.  The government has given tax breaks to rich corporations and they've got $500-Billion in the bank and they're not spending it.  Where if you give money to the people, they'll spend the money in their communities and create jobs."

However, small business owners say that kind of increase would lead them to hiring fewer workers, and would cut into their already thin profit margins.

Events are being planned for the 14th of every month to draw attention to the issue.
