Oxford County took a step towards more sustainable energy options for county buildings.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County has joined forces with Woodstock Hydro and Hydro One to reduce County carbon emissions through the Woodstock Hydro microFit program.
The program affixes a 10 kilowatt solar panel to the roofs of buildings in the hopes of generating solar energy which will reduce the reliance on other energy sources.
According to Director of Public Works, Rob Walton, Wednesday marked the start up of the solar projects at three county facilities. "This morning (Wednesday) we had the startup of the first three, three 10 kilowatt rooftop solar projects one at the Oxford Administration building one at the EMS on Mill street and the Springford patrol yard."
The projects are one of the ways Oxford County is aiming to meet their goal of reducing County carbon emissions by 10 percent in 2019.
Walton added that these are not the only projects the County has on the go, "right now we've got another larger project that is awaiting approval from the regulator...overtime we do intend to bring more projects forward."
The energy generated by the three solar panel projects is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 10 tonnes each year.
